Seminar on ‘Gender, Equity and Inclusion in New Curriculum’ held
A seminar titled “Gender, Equity and Inclusion in New Curriculum” was held at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) in Dhaka University on Saturday.
The seminar was organized by the Asian Center for Inclusive Education (ACIE), Bangladesh and co-hosted by Plan International Bangladesh and Visually Impaired People’s Society (VIPS).
In the speech of the chief guest, Professor Md Farhadul Islam said although there are many challenges in the implementation of the new curriculum, it will be possible to implement this curriculum with the direct and indirect support of different levels of participants.
He called upon the development aid agencies to work together in the implementation of the new curriculum and they would have direct support and cooperation from the government in any of their initiatives.
Other guests also expressed their hopes for the implementation of the new curriculum aligning gender equity and students with disability.
The seminar featured two separate presentations by Plan International Bangladesh and Visually Impaired People’s Society (VIPS).
Both organisations highlighted their various activities and challenges. Along with this, they will continue to implement the curriculum especially on gender, equity and inclusion initiatives and have expressed their commitment to work through collaboration with the implementing agencies of the government.
Two theme papers were presented in the seminar. Professor Dr M Tariq Ahsan presented a theme paper on “Experience Based Learning and Assessment in the Light of National Curriculum Framework – 2021” and Nasreen Sultana Mitu presented a theme paper on “Gender Inclusive Pedagogy and Teacher’s Role”.
Professor Dr Tariq Ahsan sought the support of teachers, researchers and liaison officers and development partners at all levels regarding the new curriculum.
He also mentioned that the Core Committee on Curriculum Development and Reform will be closely involved in the curriculum implementation process and the monitoring activities will continue nationwide.
In the seminar Mansoor Ahmed Chowdhury, Integrated Education Activist and Founding Trustee, Impact Foundation Bangladesh; Professor Md Moshiuzzaman, Member-Education, NCTB, Ministry of Education, Professor Ahsan Habib, IER, University of Dhaka and Md Ashiq Billah, Program Head, Central and Northern Region, Plan International Bangladesh Presented as panel discussants.
The panelists emphasized on following gender inclusive pedagogy in implementing the new curriculum. They urged for formulation and implementation of separate policy for disabled teachers and students. He suggested that organisations working with the disabled should be involved in the curriculum implementation process.
In the open discussion session, the participants suggested to organize more extensive seminars and workshops in these issues so that it is possible to give a clear idea about the curriculum.
A recommendation incorporating the feedback, suggestions and various challenges received from the seminar will be submitted to the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).
